The steel market made its intentions clear without a price letter: mills have been pulling spot offers for the balance of 2026. Nucor hot-rolled coil is quoted around $1,230 per ton, Section 232 tariffs sit at 50%, and ISM's Prices index is at 77.9 — the 24th straight month of rising input costs.
Withdrawing spot tonnage is a positioning move. A mill that will not quote spot is telling the market that it expects to sell next year's capacity on contracts, at contract prices, on the mill's terms.
Why this lands on a maintenance budget
Steel does not reach a plant as coil. It arrives as bearings, sprockets, shafts, housings, fasteners and tooling — and it arrives late, because mill pricing lags roughly 60 to 90 days before it shows up in component pricing.
That lag creates a specific, dated situation for plant buyers:
- Current bearing pricing is a lag artifact. Standard ranges are trading 2% to 5% below Q1 2026 levels while the 2026 price letters on the table run from +2.9% to +5.2%. Softness today is about metal bought months ago, not about a soft market.
- The January letters are already being written. With the mill at $1,230 and 232 at 50%, the pass-through arithmetic is not in question — only its size.
- Availability, not price, is the harder problem. Mills pulling spot offers means a buyer who needs tonnage in Q1 is competing for contracted capacity, and custom or large-bore components price and schedule behind that metal.
What to do between now and January
- Book Q1 and Q2 volume on steel-linked categories now. Bearings, mounted assemblies, sprockets, gears, bushings, shafts and fasteners all ride the same metal curve. A committed quantity is priced before the letters land.
- Use the soft window on the standard side. Where standard ranges are genuinely 2-5% under Q1 and your consumption is predictable, that is a one-time buy, not a trend to forecast from.
- Separate standard from special. Standard ranges and precision grades are on different clocks. Quoting one number for both is how a maintenance plan ends up short on the part that actually stops the line.
- Verify landed cost by SKU. Base price, freight, fuel, tariff surcharge, minimum order and packaging all move. The discount off list is the least informative number on the page.
The catalog plug
RBC Industrial stocks the power-transmission catalog deep enough to cover a Q1 booking: Timken tapered roller, mounted and metric series; the Fafnir super-precision machine-tool line; and Martin, Morse and Browning sprockets, sheaves, bushings, gears, chain and couplings — quoted with an engineer confirming the fit so the booked tonnage actually becomes working parts.
