One Sheave, Many Shafts
Every plant has a shelf full of V-belt sheaves, and most of them are single-purpose: one bore, one shaft, one job. When a motor burns out and the replacement has a different shaft diameter, the "matching" sheave turns out not to match anything. Bushed sheave systems solve that problem by separating the sheave body from the bore — the body stays the same, and an interchangeable bushing provides the shaft grip. How Taper Bushed Sheaves Work
A taper bushed sheave has a tapered bore that accepts a split, flanged bushing. The bushing is drawn into the taper with capscrews, which clamps the bushing onto the shaft and locks the sheave in place. Because the sheave bore is a standard taper, one sheave part number works with a range of bushing sizes — for example, a 3V Hi-Cap Wedge stock sheave from 2.65 in. to 19 in. OD can be mounted with bushings sized for bores from roughly 7/8 in. up to 3 in. in the larger bodies.
Stock coverage is deliberately broad. In the Martin taper bushed line, 1-groove and 2-groove 3V sheaves share the same bushing families (A-1, B-1, B-2, B-3 pattern bushings), so a maintenance team that stocks a few bushing sizes can fit dozens of sheave part numbers. Bushings are the cheap, replaceable wear item — the sheave body is the durable asset.
How QD Sheaves Differ
QD (quick disconnect) sheaves use a similar concept with a different geometry: the sheave hub is split and the bushing has a flange with threaded holes. Installation is done by seating the bushing, then drawing the sheave onto it with capscrews; removal is a matter of using the same holes as jackscrews to break the grip. QD is a favorite where drives are changed out frequently, because the disassembly is genuinely quick and the bushing system is shared across a huge range of power transmission products — sheaves, sprockets, couplings, and hubs all use the same QD bushing sizes.
Choosing Between Them
There is no universal winner — the right answer depends on what the rest of the plant already runs. If the plant's other equipment is already on taper bushed components, stay on taper bushed so one bushing family covers everything. If the plant is standardized on QD products, QD sheaves extend that standardization to the V-belt drive. In mixed fleets, pick the system with the best local stock coverage — that is where downtime is actually saved.
Sizing Checks Before You Buy
Whichever system you choose, verify these before ordering: the pitch diameter needed for the speed ratio, the belt section (3V, 5V, etc.), the bushing bore range that covers your shaft, and the sheave face width for belt alignment. The catalog tables list bushing max bore, length through bore, and weight for every stock sheave.
