Food and beverage plants are brutal on power transmission components. Washdown cycles with caustic cleaners and high-pressure water strip standard paint and plating, corrode shafts, and contaminate product zones. The result is premature failure, sanitation audit findings, and unplanned downtime in a facility that cannot afford either.

Where corrosion starts

Corrosion almost always begins at the same places: keyways and bores where plating and paint get cut, chain and sprocket tooth faces where product residue sits, and fasteners that trap washdown water. Once corrosion starts, it accelerates — rust particles flake into product zones, and a pitted sprocket or sheave wears chain and belts faster, cascading into drive failures.

What to spec for washdown

Sprockets. Stainless steel sprockets eliminate the rust path at the tooth face and keyway. For lighter duty, coated or plated carbon sprockets with stainless fasteners offer a cost-effective middle ground.

Gears. Enclosed gear drives in stainless or food-safe housings protect lubricants from washdown and keep them out of the product zone. For open gearing, material selection and guarding matter more than tooth geometry.

Sheaves and belts. Sheaves face the same corrosion path as sprockets. Food-grade belt options and corrosion-resistant sheaves keep the drive clean and reliable.

Couplings. Couplings in washdown zones need corrosion resistance at the hub and the flex element. A corroded coupling fails without warning, and in a food plant that failure is both a downtime event and a food-safety incident.
