Component Repair at 60-70 Days: The Overhaul Spares Question to Ask Before the Next Shutdown

Repair stopped being a queue and became a constraint

At MRO Europe, the industry stopped calling the supply chain disrupted and started calling it structurally tight. Component repair lead times moved from 30–40 days to 60–70 days. For one widebody engine program, overhaul time went from 85 days to more than 350.

That is not a backlog that clears with goodwill. It is a capacity problem — and the same physics now runs through industrial MRO.

Allocation is back on the table

CF34 bearings have been allocated to the U.S. military TF34 program under the Defense Production Act. When a bearing family is directed toward a defense program, commercial users inherit whatever capacity remains — and they typically find out late, after their own date has already slipped.

Boeing and Lufthansa, meanwhile, did not negotiate a better price. They extended a Tailored Parts Package for three years covering more than 6,500 part numbers. The message from the largest buyers in the market is consistent: availability is the product.

What this means for a plant with a scheduled shutdown

  • Order rotables against the shutdown date, not the failure date. Work backwards from the window you cannot move.
  • Ask whether the part family is subject to allocation. If it is, price is irrelevant and lead time is not negotiable.
  • Identify the equivalent now. The time to qualify an alternate is months before the outage, not during it.
  • Name a ship week in the PO. An acknowledgement date is a commitment. A lead-time range is a hope.

The distributor's job in this market

When repair shops are backed up, the distributor who can supply a verified replacement — not just a catalog number — is the one who keeps the schedule. Broad coverage across tapered roller, mounted assembly, and super-precision machine-tool lines, plus published mounting guidance, is what makes a documented equivalent possible instead of a guess.

Catalog item to know: Timken tapered roller bearings in single-row, double-row, metric, and single-collar mounted configurations — the families most often caught in an allocation decision.

Build the plan before the calendar does

The plants that come through a tight overhaul market intact do the same thing: they treat the shutdown date as fixed and everything else as negotiable. Rotables are ordered against that date, alternates are qualified months ahead, and the purchase order names a ship week rather than accepting a lead-time range. None of that is clever. All of it is done early, which is the only reason it works.
